Netflix categorized Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread (2017) as a “cerebral romantic drama.” The film was about love but was far from romantic. The title comes from the phenomenon that seamstresses experience after working countless hours and continue the repetitive movement of sewing despite having no threads.
The beginning of the film was weird; a lot being said but not actually being said. Both Alma (Vicky Krieps) and Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) are insane. Alma is his muse and lover. She makes him feel shitty enough that he can’t take care of himself and has to rely on her. On the contrary, Woodcock has to be pushed to the edge to feel like he is dying in order to wake up. Alma’s way of doing this is by poisoning him so he loves her more.
At the end of the film, Woodcock is aware that Alma is making poisonous mushrooms, and knowingly accepts. They both are made for each other.
